Telecommuting Proposal Writing Tip:
Equipment
The issue of whether the employer or employee should
bearor perhaps sharethe expense of equipment and telephone or
cable lines can be a complex
one. Its full exploration is beyond the scope of this website, but let me make
some suggestions.
If you're like most
Telecommuting Proposal Package
users, you are breaking new ground at your place of employment. There
are no formal telecommuting policies to guide you or your manager. No
one else is doing it—that anyone else knows about, anyway!
FIRST Take the Path of Least Resistance
So given those conditions, I suggest you take the
path of least resistance in order to get approval of your request to work from
home.
That usually means using the employer’s existing
equipment, or more than likely, equipment that you already own or
may purchase.
List the hardware and access-line specifics under your proposal heading labeled, Physical Set-up.
(Specifics found in the Telecommuting
Proposal Package.)
This approach has worked many times over for Proposal
Package users who were the first in
their department or company to get approval to telecommute.
For low-cost access to your work computer
from your home, I recommend that my customers use
remote access software such as GoToMyPC or LogMeIn.
THEN Go for the Employer-Paid Route
After three to six months of productive telecommuting and
a positive evaluation of the trial period, you are in a more established
position to put in requests for the employer to pay for or reimburse equipment,
maintenance, office supplies, software, telephone and Internet-access lines.
My other suggestion is for you to learn more about this
and a myriad of other aspects of telecommuting by the
Frequently Asked Questions
page of Gil Gordon's website. (Scroll down a bit to see the topic headings.)
The
questions are arranged by topic headings and allow you to quickly and easily
skim the lists of questions and answers under each topic which pertain to your
interests. You’ll find several related to the equipment issue.
