| Job Sharing:
Negotiating a Raise
Dear Pat: I was working part time hours but a number of things happened to force
me to leave. My former boss has asked me to return so I asked
about a job share arrangement. He thought about it and has agreed. The
woman who is currently doing my position is also all for it.
I tried for a pay raise before I left, but the department manager
refused even though my boss had agreed to it and thought I deserved it.
The department manager has now been moved to another office so that is why
I am considering going back.
My problem is this: I don't know how I should negotiate a pay increase
with a job share arrangement even though I will be in the senior role of
the position. I would appreciate your advice on this matter.

Dear
Michele: You are in a good negotiating position given that your boss has
made the request for your return and had agreed to your raise. It's called
“leverage—a very good thing to have!
In a job sharing position, two people share one position and the
benefits are pro-rated. The salaries of the two people do not necessarily
have to be equal. In fact, in many situations, such as a rookie teacher
pairing up to job share with a tenured or senior teacher, the
salaries are far apart.
You should ask for and expect the rate you had asked for
(or more) before
leaving, the rate you deserve as an experienced, more senior person,
and that was agreed upon by your boss. That rate should be applied to the
number of hours that you work. Be firm and confident about your request!
